Exclamation Kissing Spines!!

PLEASE HELP!!
My horse is in hospital with a 'mystery problem'.
I bought him a few months ago,he had a 5* vetting and xrays and passed!
(8 weeks ago)I did some dressage on him on a Friday night and he went amazing! I got him out on the saturday morning and he was having a little tantrum! When i got on him he was fine and I just walked round on a loose rein for 10mins, but when I tried to pick my reins up he got really upset! He lifted his head as high as he could to the right hand side and his eyes were rolling..he looked so sore!I only have to touch my reins and he got upset! I got off and thought maybe it was his teeth/sore back?so got dentist out-no probs!and got a physio out, there were some little things but nothing major..i gave him a few days, then tried riding again-no changes!i went abroad for a week and when i came home the 1st time i rode he seemed a little better, i did 10mins of walk, but as soon as i touched the reins he did that thing with his head, got another physio out and she 'fixed him' and still it made no difference. Then i called the vet who came out and wasnt sure what was wrong!now he is in hospital and he has had, xrays-clean, nerve block on face/neck-no difference, ridden with 3 days of bute-went really nicely!so they know somethings sore!,and he had a full body bone scan yest..they are now 'suggesting' kissing spines and are running more tests!!has anyone heard anything like it?!and how serious could it be to him and his carrer?(he is only just 9!)
I've tried everything!!bareback,bridleless(headcoller!),rest, etc..
Any ideas?
Sorry it was such an essay!!

Re: Kissing Spines!!

Hi did the vet take blood samples at the vetting,if he did it would be a idea to get them tested to rule out the horse being pumped full of pain killers.Have you had the saddle checked by a qualified fitter?.

Re: Kissing Spines!!

If it is kissing spines then it is not necessarily as bad as you might think. They can operate to correct this and horses go on to lead perfectly healthy lives. I knew a Grade A showjumper with this problem and she retired in her 20s, nothing to do with the kissing spine.

Good luck, fingers crossed for you.

Re: Kissing Spines!!

I hope you get to the root of the problem.
Poor thing is obviously in pain so I hope they can find out what is causing it.
One thing if they cannot find anything is to just turn him away for a while and see if rest will help.

Re: Kissing Spines!!

Yes, one of our vets suggested that but they need us to keep an eye on him so he still has to come in for at least 10hrs per day.. when we got him he was so kind and gentle, now if you walk past his door he will try to bite you. I've got a few bites, mainly aquired from just taking his rugs off. He also kicked the barrow so hard it cracked. See how much pain he is in for it to have changed him so much?! Going down to Newmarket and hopefully they will find some more answers! They did find a possibility, something called Trigeminal Neuralgia (the nerve behind the poll, I think?!)

Re: Kissing Spines!!

kissing spines are not good,
some can have an oporation and recover have 6-8 months off then are fine other can have an oporation then never be riden agian
and other have to be put down

my friend got a champion dressage hanoverian from holland got her shiiped to the UK she has just been out of work as had a foal and needed bringing back into work
and she was stumbling all over the place and constantly shaking her head
and would fall over when tied and tacked up for no reason and would be on the floor for around 1-7 mins

and the stresss of traveling brough kissing spine and a condition called wingles out from the stress
and she had to be put down

hope yours gets better
