Angry strangles

can you please tell me, if your horse could catch strangles if somebody who has touched a horse with strangles, then touches something, if another person touches that thing then another horse, does the horse then have a change of catching strangles?

Re: strangles

It is possible. Its not an airborn disease and is caught by contact of the mucous that comes from the nose or thats released from the abcess itself.
It is highly contagious and all persons should wash their hands, boots and any equipment that has come into contact with an affected horse.
Ive had strangles on my yard a few times now and its an awfull disease but once they've had it its highly unlikely they will get it again.

Re: strangles

Best to keep away from horses and their equiptment........"Once inside a stable or yard, strangles can spread quickly through direct contact between horses or via indirect contact, - tack and equipment - shared drinking bowls and feed - clothing - hands

It is thought that the bacteria can survive in water for at least four weeks, and up to eight weeks on tack or wood.

Once transmitted, signs of disease usually occur after 3-14 days, with abscesses formed up to 2 weeks following infection. "
