Horse Deformities?

Could someone name me a hereditary deformity which has been introduced to the horse through domestication? I've got an essay to write about them and I'm not really sure where to start as I know nothing about horses!

Thanks!

Re: Horse Deformities?

Do you mean a conformational deformity for example the crap thin feet TB's often have or an extreme one would be dwarfism in the miniature breeds, or a cosmetic one like the extreme dished mosquito looking faces that is required in modern show arabs which gives them terrible teeth and breathing problems all in the name of supposed beauty, or do you mean fatal internal flaws that you can't see for example holes in the mesentry leading to fatal colics??
samhill likes this.

Re: Horse Deformities?

Experience unfortunately!!!! I've lost 2 friesians to mesenteric colic 1 was only a yearling, and know of 5 others directly, it's a genetic abnormality in the breed because of masses of inbreeding, I know of 4 others that have died from aortic rupture - the list goes on with them! I had a friend years ago with a show arab with a squished face that had major dental issues because of the way it was bred to look, I also had to look after someones arab that had major joint issues at 3 and could never be ridden as a result, and would probably have to be pts sleep by 10, because of it's action to move like a pogo stick in the show ring! I have TB's who don't always have great feet, and have been to Newmarket enough to see tons of others with equally crap feet - speed is the issue nothing else!!!
