Poor Romeo :(

Romeo had his annual attack of choke last night, every Autumn for the last 3 years this has happened. He had a Tie-back when he was in racing which can make some horses more prone to choke, but why does he only do this in the Autumn??? Any clues?
The first time he choked was a real nasty one, took the vet ages to clear the blockage, second time was because my friend put dry hay out in the field not knowing that he chokes on it, & last night he choked on his bucket feed which was pretty moist with sugar beet. Loks like from now on I will have to soak his feeds into a soup & feed him like a toothless veteran!

Re: Poor Romeo :(

Poor Romeo, choke can be very scary.

No idea why it happens more in the Autumn, but it sounds like coincidence from what you say. Could it be when he gets more hungry and bolts his food? Is it the time he's coming up to needing his teeth doing?

Don't know.

Re: Poor Romeo :(

Can't be teeth as I had them done in the summer & they are fine, the only thing I can think of is that he was gawping at something in the distance last night at feed time, you know how they do that eyes on stalks, nostrils flared & suddenly grow a couple of hh lol & he sorta snatched at his food, he only had a couple of mouthfuls but if he was too busy looking for scary monsters in the distance maybe he forgot to chew properly? Maybe you're right & it's just a coincidence, but 3 Autumns in a row is a weird coincidence! Anyway he rather enjoyed his 'soup' this morning & is back to his usual self, gonna continue with the soup as I can't risk him doing it again, I have heard that every time they choke the inflammation causes scarring in the oesophagus (sp?) which then makes them even more prone to choke. *Sigh*
