Itching...

Hi
My boy has become very irriatated by something inbetween his armpits...under his chest area...any ideas what this may be?
Have washed all his legs and armpits with hibiscrub...and gave him a full tea tree bath last week...could it be some kind on spring mite?
He has been rubbing it a bit sore, so have put some antiseptic cream on today...would anyone suggest any mite powders of lotions incase its that?

Re: Itching...

Could be a fly problem, being under the armpits, belly or between the legs. He may have a allergy to biting insects. Have you tried using a antiseptic cream with added insect reppellant?

On the matter of allergies have you changed anything like saddle soap or washing power, he might be sensitive to something.

If it's not improving I would maybe ring the vet for advice or get him out for a visit.

Re: Itching...

I know a horse who has a similar problem due to the mozzies being the time of year it is! In which case prevention is better than cure in my experience. Try using something to prevent flies and things biting, for examle I feed garlic all year round which helps repel the mozzies. Admittedly some horses it doesnt work so well on but I have found it really useful. Although it does have to be fed from around November if I am correct for it to be helpful the following summer! It is also good for them in many other ways too.

I also fly spray once a day (when the weather is hot, if not I dont bother) and those two things together have seemed to have cured my mares fly problem! Last year was a nightmare and she was always covered in bites, this year she hasnt had a problem with them at all!

Re: Itching...

Hello guys..
well my boy is still itching..I have had the vet out and he has had a bath in malesb fungul wash...an injection and skin scrapes which have come back negative for mites/parasites etc..the vet also gave me an all over spray to use and this hasnt worked either!
The only thing i can think of...is eczma?...i have read that aloe vera is good for this...and its funny as i did put some aloe vera gel on some areas on his cheek area and the hair does look like it may regrow..as there are some new hairs coming through..
The vet has now suggested using steroid creams...but I dont think that will cure the problem either...
Has anyone had a pony with ezcma?
Thanks
Maz
