Mare giving birth help

Hi it's not my horse she's in a feild with a load of other mares, they are all left alone, relying on passers by for food and water no vet help available - she gave birth to one foal alone ok, but about 4 hours later i saw her lie down, then as i was walking away heard distressed neighing and they all ran to her....is there somethingwrong? no idea who owns the horses, they have no shelter or anything, i don't think the owner goes near them much. Is there anything i can do to help? What if something is wrong with the mare? will the other horses take care of the baby? i think another one was pregnant too but it was deffo the foal's mother that screeched...

Re: Mare giving birth help

Please contact World Horse Welfare immediately if you cant get in touch with the owners - they will respond (far quicker than the RSPCA would)

From their website:
Please call our Welfare Hotline at 08000 480 180 with as much detail as possible about the condition of the horse(s).
simplysardonic and Amethyst like this.

Re: Mare giving birth help

I would also contact the World Horse Welfare or the RSPCA, or both.

Buts its nature? Youre so against spaying and neutering animals, so the fox should be able to have its prey! Thats nature...

It is very unlikely a fox would eye up a foal...

I would imagine the fox if anything would be after a bit of the after birth.. Likely none would be left though....

Unless it is a mini foal then it's highly unlikely a fox would go after a foal. They're much bigger then foxes, and a mare can easily kill a fox if she kicked it.

As momentofmadness said it's probably just after the after birth, or it's been attracted by the smell of blood.

Re: Mare giving birth help

My mum used to rent a yard when I was younger.. and there was a fox that used to watch us ride everyday.. You could just see it peering through the bushes.. Lovely site to see...
