Question Star's eating poo! Why?

I was out poo picking the paddock yesterday and came across Star eating poo off the field

I don't know if it's his onw poo or Storms but it's strange and quite disgusting! I've heard it could be down to him lacking on some nutrients, but what I don't know????

He is fed daily, safe and sound mix and fast fiber pellets soacked with a variety of fruit and veg, and he is out at grass although grass is quite low at the moment. However he is a good doer and looks like he could loose a few pounds, so I don't want to over feed him.

Can anyone help or offer some advice I would be very grateful??

Re: Star's eating poo! Why?

Some time ago one of my dogs did this so I went to talk to the vet.

The vet explained that this is normal for a dog as it can smell something tasty in it which had not been digested properly.

The vet also told me that it is only we human beings who find it revolting animals do not as it is just food to them.

Thankfully, my dog stopped doing it when I changed the exercise area.

Please understand the above is only what I have been told by my vet it is not my own explanation so before we get the inevitable "expert" jumping all over me I do not profess to be an expert on dog behaviour .

They sometimes eat this when they are lacking in minerals.

Try giving a good all round vit and min supplement and root veg in the feed - root veg draw out minerals from the soil as they grow.

Id agree with lack of some kind of nutrient...or not enough of one...a bit strange..if it was fresh poo..that would be very odd, but i can understand a horse playing or nosing around old droppings as they would have started to decompose..my boy used to try and eat dry clumps mud occasionally when he was a youngster...but soon got out the habit of it!

Re: Star's eating poo! Why?

It was nearly fresh poo as the paddocks are cleared of poo daily. I have since supplied him with a field vit and mineral lick. I haven't seen him eat any more although I can't watch him 24/7. I hope it's solved the yucky habbit, and he loves his lick!

Re: Star's eating poo! Why?

Nothing worse than a big pooey lick from a puppy.

Lennie done it for a while if he got away with it, but seems to have grown out of it, he only tries to do it to "Clean up" if he's had an accident in the house now so he doesn't get into trouble.

Everytime he went to do it when he was ickle i just gave an "AH AH" and he seemed to take the hint.
