Question Mud Rash Woes

Please, please, please can anyone help!!
I have a 19 yr old part bred Arab and this year i am having major problems with mud rash. Last year we had no problems what so ever, but this year (even in summer!!) he has had mud rash really badly.
The vet has treated him twice with antibiotics which do work....until i turn him out again! today is the 24/2/2010 and this is the 15th day he has been out since christmas day. (spends at least a week in recovering from being turned out)
Ive tried alsorts of barrier creams, patrolium jelly etc but nothing works....i even found mud rash on his belly!! Im at a loss of what to do next...does anyone have any ideas?
Ive even thought about moving yards....as i say he never suffered before we moved to our new yard.
Any suggestions greatly recieved

Re: Mud Rash Woes

Hi,

What an awful situation to be in. I am lucky in the fact that my horse doesnt suffer from it at all and we atre knee deep in mud but to be honest I think it definately depends on what yard you are at!!
Like I say we are knee deep and we have greys and chesnuts with white socks having no problems what so ever, they all get hosed down when they come in in the evenings and we havent had any signs.

Judging by what you are saying, this is making your ponies life a bit of a hell as he is now being constantly stuck in which cant be nice! Personally I think your last option would be to move yards. A lot of people I know believe that it is in the ground so if the ground has it your horse is sure to get it too, I am not sure on whether I quite believe this or not and have also found that with one of my old horses he was better to have the mud left on over night and brushed off in the moring when it was dry and he was fine, if I hosed he got mud rash.

Try asking around frineds you may have at different yards and see what they think and if any horses at their yards have had it etc.

Good luck and let us know how u get on

Smile Re: Mud Rash Woes

thanks melx,

Ive tried both with Casper, both hosing and leaving the mud to dry and neither work. He was turned out again on thursday and by saturday he was stuck in again!
Having spoken to the vet (yet again!) on saturday, im now going to have 1 last try on this yard by coating his legs in sudocrem and then veg oil! Ive never heard of this one but i will give it a go!
If it fails i do have another yard lined up where none of the horses have mud rash, but my only problem is moving presents a new set of problems with my foal! lol Life might be simple one day lol
