steaming hay

hi, i had to stop feeding my mare, haylage as she is a good doer, but feeding her hay made her cough, so looked into steaming her hay, but all seemed way over my price range, so i made my own costing less then £50, it works a treat. i bought a waterbut from a local DIY shop, it already had the hole in the bottom where the tap should be. then bought a wallpaper steamer and the hose fits perfectley into the hole, attach the flat paddle to the hose inside the butt, this keeps it nice and secure, fill wallpaper steamer turn on and hey steamed hay in less than 20 mins, perfect for them cold winter nights, no more icy cold hands from soaking hay all day.

Re: steaming hay

It sounds like a great idea and I must try it myself.

Re: steaming hay

We didnt have electricity on our yard so I used a plastic feed bag or dustbin and a couple of flasks of boiling water. Fluff up sections of hay and layer in the bag/bin with the hot water. Seal and leave to cool.
