Pony free to good home

Due to ill health I am sadly looking to rehome my 15 yr old 14:1 welsh cob type mare. She is very good natured and currently lives out. We are looking for a companion home as she is unsound, however could be riden by a child for lead reign or walking. We are based in Fife, Scotland.

Re: Pony free to good home

Please please be careful when giving a horse/pony away Free. There are so many horror stories that would make you cringe.
However, when i was looking for a companion for my TB i did get a 'freebie' & i'm as honest as the day as there isn't as many of us about.
There are good & bad in the world but when it comes to animals you really do have to scrutinise people as you want the very best for your animals.

I put an advert on https://www.horsetrader.snequestrian.com/classifieds/ looking for a companion & this is where i got Maize from. Maybe you could do the same.

Good luck with finding a forever home. She is a 14.2 WelshxTB bay who is 15 years old. Nothing wrong with her but her previous owner outgrew her & went onto horses. Her father had said Maize would need to go before he would commit on getting her a bigger horse. I know i would get a few thousand for her but she's here with me for life. If i had more land i would give yours a forever home but as it is i haven't.

Yep! as the above poster has said be very wary of advertising her for free! Would be aweful if she ended up as dogmeat! AND when and if you do rehome her be sure to check out any potential homes thoroughly! NOT a knock at the post above but that member only has one post so was probably looking for a horse so be very wary there too!
DT

No offence to you RonaSmith - but sure you will agree

I would also be very careful - I know of many who ended up as workhorses despite being unsound - an awful life for the horse but the new owner just wanted to make money out of them. They are often sold on for profit either to unsuspecting buyers or the meat trade.
I hope you find a forever loving home for your pony.

Re: Pony free to good home

Have you thought about contacting the ILPH International league for the Protection of horses? Im pretty sure they help rehoming in such circumstances by taking the Horses/ponies in, in some cases and then rehoming them. I personally am not a horse owner, but Im pretty sure they might be able to help. certainly worth checking and as the OPs have said much much safer than advertising her free to a good home. Question is done that way, will she find a good permanent home.

The only problem with contacting the ILPH or the WHW (which is now known as) they are bursting at the reems with ponies/horses as the recession has hit horse owners & they can no longer afford to keep there equines.

Maybe worth asking if they may know of anybody looking for a pony/horse ??

I have noticed a hell of a lot of good horses that are worth a lot going for either very cheap or free as like i say people can not afford to keep them anymore.

I must admit I just about known the difference when it comes to distinguishing both ends of a horse Thats about the extent of my knowledge Its just that I had seen a programme on the work of the ILPH was quite awhile ago I must admit and knew they did help. As you say might be worth a shot though, especially as its a case of the owners illness.

Re: Pony free to good home

Thank you for all your comments, I know advertising as "free" to good home is a risk, however I have no intention of letting my pony go to any old home! My mare deserves a loving forever home where she can be well treated and cared for for the rest of her days and I certainly intend to keep my wits about me and hope that I am successful in doing the right thing by her.
With regards to WHW and the like (which would have been my prefered choice for rehoming) I have tried them all prior to advertising on this site and as mentioned they are all busting at the seams in this current climate and are unable to help!!
Wish me luck...........x
