Learning how to look after a horse

Hi,
Ive been learning to ride and would really like to start learning how to look after a horse (mucking out..feeding..cleaning..tacking up etc), with a view to loan/own a horse of my own in a year or 2.
I've tried the local stables but they say they have far too many requests like this and give preferences to younger people (im 28)
So..im hoping someone here will either have some ideas on where to try, or have a horse of their own they'd like some help with

I used to do this sort of thing when i was younger (aged 11-15) when i worked at a stables in return for free riding lessons so i'm hoping to pick it up pretty quickly 2nd time round. I'm confdent around horses so that shouldnt be a problem.

So..if you can help, i'd love to here from you!
Im in the Liverpool area and work in Manchester so anywhere in these 2 areas can be considered

Helen

Re: Learning how to look after a horse

you could put an ad on somewhere like preloved (dunno if i can say that :S) explaining that your learning to ride and would like to help someone with general stable duties in return for the knowledge they have to offer?

read plenty of books, the Pony Club Manual is my bible! How about volunteering at a rescue centre with horses or at a Riding for the Disabled yard?

Re: Learning how to look after a horse

have a google searchfor some horse forums, I would give you the one I use, but its for south-east users so no good to you.

Also put up a notice in your local tack shop/feed barn.

adverts on pre-loved could be an idea too!

good luck

Re: Learning how to look after a horse

Sorry cant help in the offering of some mucking out, would gladly of welcomed help a few months ago but have put my horse out on loan now.

Please dont give up, keep trying. Have you asked at the school where your having lessons? I am suprised if they turned you down.

Its nice to hear that you want to learn before you get your horse rather than experiment and learn by your msitakes.

Thanks for your advice everyone. I will place some ads where you suggested and keep looking.
The yard I ride at said they simply have too many people interested and already helping out to take on any others But if I keep asking, I'm sure i'll get something!
