How much should I pay?

I have been loaning a horse for the last 2 years and am now wanting to buy her. She is a 16'2 Thoroughbred around 17 years old. She has shivers and also had quite a bad accident a couple of years ago where her hoof went through the horsebox floor, she had treatment for it and is now sound. her owner is asking £800 for her but I am unsure if this is fair as she has the shivers, injury, her age, and due to the accident she will now not box. I know some people will probably question why I would consider buying her in the 1st place but I've loaned her for 2 years now and couldn't give her up. Any advice would be very much appreciated please?

I paid Over that For my Arab who was 20. I paid £1000 for a 14 year old (4 years ago) who had laminatus the year before and i paid £1500 for a 16 year old 6 years ago who had had lamiantus in the past. I dont regret a penny for either of them Why because they were all worth it if not more.

Only you know the horse. But to me sounds fair

Edit: and with work and if she trusts you, you can get her to box again! My 17hh hated trailers, with time he boxed. x

Re: How much should I pay?

I think the owner (sorry to say it) is probably pulling on your heart strings a little. They know you wouldnt ever want to lose her so would most likely pay any price!
I think maybe that the price is slightly high, but only slightly. I paid £1000 for my mare with all tack and rugs and she wasnt worth that as she was all skin and bone with a worm belly and no muscle etc. Wasnt nice but I fell for her when I viewed her and now she is the best thing I ever bought! If I was to sell her now (not that I ever would) I have been told that I should ask for no less than £4500 due to how amazing she is after the work I have put in to get her right.

This horse may have problems but once she is yours you can work on everything your own way without someone breathing down your neck and you already know her which is an added bonus! She will box again, but something like this takes consistency but if you stick at it you will get there in the end

Re: How much should I pay?

I agree with Melx, they are definitely pulling at your heart strings.

I wouldn't pay the amount they are looking for with a horse with shivers.
My friend has a horse with shivers & she has had to retire him as it's getting worse.
He has become unsteady & falls over on occasions while grazing in the field.
Shivers will progressively worsen over time.

What would you do if the horse does get worse over a short amount of time ??
To me if the owner knows you will give the horse a good home (which you will) then they should gift the horse to you for a token of £1 & maybe buy the tack separate.

I bought my 15.2 Chestnut TB mare at the age of 15 years with absolutely nothing wrong with her as a confidence giver with a complete full wardrobe for £850, so there are horses out there for much less if you look.

Good luck with whatever you decide on doing.

XxX

Re: How much should I pay?

I agree with blackdiamond, I dont know an awful lot about shivers because I have never dealt with a horse which has this so after hearing what she has said I would most definitely not pay that price.
I think you need to put forward to the owners that you would give the horse a good home and they know you well enough to trust you with this. If they disagree then let them try and sell her for that much because they wont get very far unless they find someone who hasnt a clue about horses and the impact of such a condition.

You need to almost haggle with them, dont pay the highest price because they will most likely budge. Everybody starts at the highest price when selling something with the expectation of the price going down to the right person.

Have a chat with them and they may budge, the worst answer you can get is no
