Horse riding lessons... ???

Hi guys,

first of all I should mension that I have bearly even touched a horse, let alone sat on one! although I have been wanting to learn how to ride for a couple of years now. Im almost 21 and was just wondering whether it is abit late for me to start? My mother did not send me to swimming lessons until I was 12 and I can remember the utter humiliation of learning in the baby pool with 4 year olds and I would rather not re-live that experience again! lol

thanks, Rebecca xxx

Nope its never too late! I didn't start until I was 17! Im sure most riding schools try to put groups of a similar age together. If not and your feeling self concuss you could always have a couple of privet lessons?

Re: Horse riding lessons... ???

hi

ask around in your area and you should be able to find a decent riding school, pop over or give them a ring and ask for adult beginers lessons. I used to teach a few years ago and usually the last couple of lessons in the evening only had adults on.

The atmosphere on them was great as there was no children present, adults didint have to watch their Ps and Qs quite as much and it was eally enjoyable as everyone had been in the same boat somewhere along the line.

Friendships developed as more often than not it was off to the bar for a hard earned drink and everyone had a really good chin wag.

Dont be shy, get going, you will love it

Re: Horse riding lessons... ???

Don't be shy go for it! Loads of adults learn to ride...I rode from the age of 3 til 17 and then didn't start again until I was 30 so I had lessons for a few years and most in our class were my age plus!!! My mum has always been scared of horses and she sat on my horse Kane a couple of years ago...at the gran age of 60 her first time on a horse and she loved it!!!! (Didn't love the getting off bit though cos she got stuck!!!).

Honestly be brave and give a riding school a ring, I promise you won't regret it and if you are anything like most people you'll be hooked!!!

Smile Re: Horse riding lessons... ???

It is definately never to late to start riding!! I am 20, I rode from the age of 5 until I was was 12 then gave up for 3 years due to an accident and loosing my confidence. When I decided to go back to riding I had private lessons with an instructor at a riding school.
Although I knew everything when it came to riding I had no confidence (trust me it is alot worse than being a beginner)
I felt so embarassed because I had all the experience and knowledge but physically I couldnt do it, to the point I would be near tears . After starting my private lessons it all came flooding back and it is alot easier because it is just you, the horse, and the instructor so there is no reason to get embarrased!!
I look at riding as if it is marmite.... You either really love it and never never turn your back on the horsey side of you, of you try it, dont like it, and not interested from then on in horses or riding.

After having my lessons I decided to buy a new horse. I had owned in the past before I gave up but this time thought I would go a step further and buy a 16.2hh TB Mare.
If it wasnt for my lessons I wouldnt have her!!

Go for it.... You will love it!!!!

Keep us updated!

No, it's not too late, you are still young Rebecca, go for it.
I took my BHS stage one at the age of 45 with a lot of 17 year olds, it was fun. Didn't go any further though.

Re: Horse riding lessons... ???

There was a gentleman I knew who took up riding at my local riding school when he retired in his 60s so as long as any person is able to get on and off they can learn to ride, even if someone is physically disabled RDA have hoists so people can get on and off horses...... many women take up riding when their children have started school or left home. The only thing I would suggest is research your riding school and make sure you get a good one that you can have fun, ride in adult classes and gain confidence..... good luck and enjoy it!!!!!

Re: Horse riding lessons... ???

I was 49 when I took lessons.
I had to stop because we got a 2nd dog so I had no more time and I can't go back because of the money.
So go ahead and enjoy yourself.
