Right Dorsal Colotis ?

My Pony Has 'Right Dorsal Colitis' and has for the last four months , hes constanly been getting better and worse again been at the vets for a few weeks , as he stopped eating and doing the toilet , sorted that problem and it comes back agen then goes away , hes getting better again , does any one know if he will fully recover from this and if he could ever get ridden again or will this problem ever go away?

thanks x

I am so sorry to hear about the problems you are having with your pony.
It is difficult to say what the outcome is for RDC to be honest.
Are you confident with the vets he is being treated by?
Have they put him on any medication and what advice were you given on his daily care and routine?

ye , well he only gets blood tests every so often now to see how he is getting on and seems to be doing much better , hes not on any medication any more as hes recovering but this is like a replay of last time but has stayed healthyer longer this time , his diet is out in the grass during day then in to his large bucket of pony nut and carrots as this is all he will eat now and gets a grass net , as hes not allowed to have hay or straw in his bed , sawdust we use .

Re: Right Dorsal Colotis ?

The usual management of a horse with RDC is small frequent pelleted food split into 4-6 small feeds a day and grazing limited to 15 minute periods a few times a day and reduction or elimination of hay from the diet..
If he is still having problems then maybe you should chat to your vet about his managment and talk about getting him back on meds.
There are also a number of additives you can use to aid the gut.Probiotics and digestive aids may just help to keep your pony healthier longer.
