Re: seperation anxiety

Where i keep my horse, there is a 18 yr old pony. He did not have the best start in life and does exactly the same as your mare is doing. Left on his own in the stable without any other equine company he goes completly mad and if he's the only one out in the field he will gallop around the field for hours even sometimes attempting to jump the fence. To me it does sound like your mare has seperation anxiety. Have you had her since a foal? If not were ever she was brought up she might of been with another horse 24/7 and is still not sure why she is being left on her own when the other horse disappears. I'm not sure if this would help but you could try some calming supplements and maybe give your mare her hard feed (if she has any) when the other horse leaves her so she has something to distract herself- it has helped with the pony on my yard. I hope you get it sorted and i hope my feedback is useful- if not i'm sorry.

Re: seperation anxiety

With only one horse other than her on the yard it is a tricky one.
Short of buying or loaning her a companion you are rather limited on options as at her age you are unlikely to change her now.
I would be tempted to either do just that and maybe get an old pony on loan or move to a busier yard so there are always horses around her.
