Any Flatcoat Retriever owners?

Since my Lab fell madly in love with a beautiful black Flatcoat girl at our local park, I've really started to like this breed. Met a few really sweet ones at Discover Dogs too.

Anyone feel like posting pics of their Flatcoats so I can get my fix for the day?

Also - how do you find them with regard to training etc? The one that my dog plays with is a real personality, but also very intelligent. (When I recall my dog, she now comes racing over to me and sits in front of me for treats!)

Thanks very much in advance for any pics and info

Re: Any Flatcoat Retriever owners?

I think you've seen all my photographs of Rhuna, I can post them again if you're desperate

I find Rhuna's character softer than the Labs, difficult to explain, Tau is very soft, Rhuna isn't as much of a mummy's girl, but she definitely has more of a desire to please than either of my Labs. Sometimes it takes a while for the penny to drop, but she gets there eventually.

I don't know where in the country you're based, but I'll let you know if/when I'm at any shows in the future, you're welcome to pop along and meet her

Here's a link for you, look through the links on the left hand side

Ooh yes, please do let me know when you're at a show - that would be fab, thank you!

The pics of Rhuna are beautiful, she has such a sweet expression

Many thanks for the link

I think I know what you mean about the 'desire to please'. I only know one Flatcoat well, though I've met more, but the one I know is very 'biddable', if that makes sense?

To gatecrash the flattie fix:

Oh, your flatties are darling! The adults look so regal and the pups are just adorable.

Oh, ***GORGEOUS***!!!

Are Brooke and Zanna liver-coloured? I've never met one in 'real life' so these pics are a treat, thank you very much!!

edited to add:

Thank you so much for the link, just been enjoying your wonderful photos!!

How do you find Flatcoats as a breed, out of interest? The ones I know are full of personality and real livewires!

Re: Any Flatcoat Retriever owners?

Oh they are many things all rolled into one dog ;-)

They are intelligent, biddable and very eager to learn. They have one he'll of a nose on them and are air scenters, unlike your lab who is a ground scenter

They have a wicked sense of humour, and will play to an audience. They lick. Don't get a flat if you don't like kisses, it is controllable but they still like to do it. They also mouth andmany will hold your arm/ clothing . They are easily bored, and like company. They need adequate exercise as adults and to free run , mental stimulation is an absolute must.

They are goofballs, they can be so elegant, they will do anything to please, and anything they find pleasing. Slow to mature mentally and physically .

All that said, mine get an hours exercise off lead daily, they also get training most days. They sleep most of the remaining time : lol: As with any dog, you get back what you put in. More akin with my border collies than my Labrador in energy but less impulsive behaviours ! My lab was a fairly lazy lump though!

Not sure where you are located, but you are welcome to meet my girls :-) they welcome visitors ;-)

They sound just like the Flatcoat beauty that my dog adores; the dogs are best mates and a sheer joy to watch together

Thank you sooo much for your kind offer! I am in north west London but if I'm ever due to visit your neck of the woods I would LOVELOVELOVE to meet your girls, they are so gorgeous

I agree with your specific choice of word by the way, I too always think how 'elegant' my Lab's Flattie girlfriend is!

Re: Any Flatcoat Retriever owners?

LOL - just re-read your comments and am laughing to myself, recalling the time Dex's Flattie friend decided she liked my coat so much, she just had to hang on to the sleeve with her mouth! On and off for almost two hours

Do flat coats come into rescue very often?
