Originally I wanted to get another rescue, but now feel it would be better to get a puppy, so that I can ensure proper socialisation etc and avoid some of the issues which I've experienced with Dexter. That said, he has the sweetest temperament so if the new dog also had such a lovely nature, it would be wonderful.
Puppies are hard work............but they don't come without problems. It all depends on where you buy them. For example I wouldn't buy from a pet shop. You really don't know what you are buying. Invariably the dogs do no come with any papers and there is a 100% chance they have been puppy farmed and that will bring with it genetic issues.
I would always go to a reeder, I would check them out and their facilities and i would always like to see sire and dam. And because I require working dogs, I like to see the sire and dam working prior to purchasing a pup. But I still think I wouldn't buy one until the first one was 100% steady.

Re: Bringing in a new dog.

We are hopefully taking home a new pup next year so Chester will be 2 1/2 to 3ish.
We had the chance of one just this summer past but OH wanted to concentrate on Chester for this season so decided to wait for the next litter.
Looking back we def made the right choice.

Re: Bringing in a new dog.

We did everything against the text book, bringing in a nine month old when ours was six months old, but she really was the right dog at the right time in our case. We think it has made our life easier having her with the level she came in at. But again i suspect we are the exception, having in general been the luckiest with the first pup and the way he trained, the way he accepted her and pretty much everything!

I've had a puppy before

And yes, I would only go to a reputable breeder. I would NEVER EVER even consider getting a pup from a puppy farm or pet shop etc. Never!
