dying cat - dilemma

unfortunately our cat has an untreatable virus and is dying. this is very distressing but nothing can be done. he is 12 and had an amazing and interesting life. so i can deal with this - albeit sadly

the vet says he is not actually in pain just a bit of discomfort but this will get worse over the next few days - he has about a week left of 'bearable' life. he is currently at the vets and has been for a week (while all the tests were being done)

the dilemma is ....... do we bring him home for a few days and then take him back when its obviously too much. in an ideal situation i would do this but the problem is our other cat. they are very close and she is pining for him. will bringing him home for a few days and then taking him away again make things worse?

any experiences?

So sorry to hear this, only you can make this decision, but if it were my cat, I would let him go now before the suffering gets any worse.
You know he is going shortly, why make him suffer any more?

such a horrible situation, you have to do what you feel is best for your cat although if he`s in discomfort and it`s going to get worse then it may be best not to let it get to that stage. my thoughts are with you

Re: dying cat - dilemma

you will have to let the cat go one way or the other.. it is a horrid decision... can the vet not come to your house to pts, so that the other cat can see and sense what is happening to it's friend.... may be that is a human emotion, I don't know...

C x

Re: dying cat - dilemma

so sad for you to have to make the choice. I myself wouldnt bring cat home as other cat will have to go through seperation all over again and will be upsetting for all of you. Id spend some quality time alone with your cat at vets and let him go to rainbows bridge pain free.

I had to decide to let "bobs" go last year at 17 years of age before he started to suffer. Its hard but deep down i knew it was better for him

Sending hugs to you

Re: dying cat - dilemma

I have heard some people say it is best to let other animals in the house see the animal who has passed away but I dont think that is always practical.

I would say my farewells at the vets rather than him go through anymore stress of backwards & forwards home to vets, so very sorry for him & you it does sound like he has had a loved life with you x

Re: dying cat - dilemma

I'm so sorry that you're faced with such an awful decision.
I have to say that I agree with what the guys have already said, although I must also admit that I would instinctively want to bring him home.
It's such a difficult position to be in, and it must be so hard to let him go.
Given the situation, though, I would spend time with him at the vets and then let him go - As much as it hurts, I think saving him the stress of to-ing and fro-ing and saving your other cat having to see him for a short while, then have to start missing him all over again would in a way outweigh having him home for a couple of days.
Still - we can all only tell you what we would do, and I'm sure that whatever you decide will be right for you. I hope you get comfort from all your happy memories of the wonderful life you gave him.
Lots of hugs to you all. xxx

I agree with what you say. When my Puss died I wanted my others to see that he was gone because I had read that this was the right thing to do, but to be honest they didn't want to know, they wouldn't even sniff at him. I didn't get any feeling that they recognised who or what this was. I have only done it once so have no idea whether this experience was typical or unusual, but my view is that cats will cope with the loss in their own way so the most important consideration is the best interests of the sick cat.
