Re: Why are people against Pets at home

The pets at home in Exmouth puts toys in for the animals and the staff have to undergo training, completing a training book and test before they are allowed to sell animals so that they have as much understanding of the animals as possible.

Last Sunday we went to one of our local pets at home and there was six Syrian hamsters in a tank like cage with only one bed, no wheel and the tank was only about a foot long and not even a foot wide and I think that is cruel. It's a big store and I think they should devote more space to the hamsters and give them proper cages with toys. They also have a light on all day and as we all know hamsters are nocturnal so it's wrong.

Also most of the staff aren't very helpful. In fact I went to buy a guinea pig from there this summer and the girl serving me decided to break off from serving me to have a conversation with her friend who had just popped in the store, now that is downright rude in my opinion.
When I was in there on Wednesday I went past the tanks that they keep the Gerbils and Hammys etc in, and all the lights were off in the Gerbil tanks but not in the Hammy tanks
They do give some good advice At our store, especially when we got Florence and they have been a little bit helpful with Dorrie

You must have a very good branch then because at ours they are over crowded and just one little house between them.

Re: Why are people against Pets at home

GSDlover4ever's. Yes I started working there in May. I have finished my steps one book and am nearly ready to take my steps 2 which will mean I am aloud to sell animals.
My store seems to work differently from ones I am hearing about, that is why I posted this.
The staff in the Exmouth branch try to be as helpful as possible and we take different qualifications on areas in store to build up our knowledge.
The animals get toys to play with. They get hay in the mornings then nuggets at 11 and veg in the afternoon. I don't think the cages are over crowded.
It would be good if I could get feed back for the Exmouth branch to see how the public view it.
I love animals and would hate to think people thought we were mistreating them in some way.
Animals deserve loving homes and offer so much.

Re: Why are people against Pets at home

Every time I've been in my local P@H they've always had the rats labelled wrong. The top eared rats have been called dumbo's for many months and vice versa, despite me telling them they'd got it wrong. Dumbo rats are more expensive and I have been told by someone working at the store that you shouldn't mix dumbos and top ears as they'll fight as they're different types of rat which is totally stupid! The rats are always overcrowded in tanks much too small just for one rat let alone 5 of them.

I unfortunately have to go into the store though as they do make a good range of rat food which my rats absolutely love. They do supply lots of accessories for your animals but I do find them very expensive and could probably find them cheaper at the local market or smaller pet shop.

Most of the staff are useless and half the time their service isn't exactly great!

I agree with that, they tried to overcharge me by nearly £20 last Sunday. I looked at my receipt and they had charged me for some sort of square bed which was £19.56 and I hadn't bought anything like that, just a few hamster bits.
