Re: In Flanders fields

I dont agree with wars but i do respect the young men and women who have given the ultimate sacrifice for us.

Ive been to the repatriation in wootton bassett a few times now, and each time i pray its the last.

I have a poppy on my coat, and my children are making poppies to lay at our memorial. Sadly this is a new housing estate, and the pillar in the park wasnt placed originally as a memorial. Its now been turned into one by local demand. It already has 1 name on a plaque

Helmand

Night on the cold plain,
invisible sands lift,
peripheral shadows stir,

space between light and dark
shrouding secrets;
old trades draped grey.

Here too poppies fall,
petals blown on broken ground,
seeds scattered on stone

and this bright bloom,
newly cropped,
leaves pale remains,

fresh lines cut;
the old sickle wind
sharp as yesterday.

We always wear a poppy and we always attend the service. My nephew also serves and just got back about 2 months ago. To all members who have served or have family that have or do serve. Thank you from the bottom of my heart...Luv Jill

Re: In Flanders fields

I get the kids to get a poppy, they kind of know what it's all about, I do the minute's silence if I can remember and I think that if they don't, schools should adhere to the minute silence too.

My Brother in Law is in the REME and is posted out in Germany for the next few years, he often gets sent out to Afghanistan for 6 months at a time. I pray and beg for him to come home safely to the wife (my sister obviously) and children that dote on him and are loyal to him through and through.

I thank those with solemn mind, that have been left behind, those that fought brave and bold, for this country a flag to hold. Sorry about that, I just made it up heheh.

Thank you again.

Re: In Flanders fields

As an Army brat I always buy poppies every year. Ma in law still crys every armistice day for the boys that didnt come home. My da and one of my old bosses (both ex army) always had at least 5 mins silence and took a while to come back to their old selves.

Re: In Flanders fields

I got sent this poem and thought I would pass it on.

Lest we forget

"Please wear a poppy", the lady said, And held one forth, but I shook my head,
Then I stopped and watched as she offered them there, And her face was old and lined with care,
But beneath the scars the years had made, There remained a smile that refused to fade.

A boy came whistling down the street, Bouncing along on carefree feet,
His smile was full of joy and fun, "Lady", said he, "may I have one"?
When she'd pinned it on he turned to say, "Why do we wear a poppy today"?

The lady smiled in her wistful way, And answered, "This is Remembrance Day,
And the poppy there is the symbol for The gallant men who died in war,
And because they did, you and I are free, That's why we wear a poppy, you see.

"I had a boy about your size, With golden hair and big blue eyes.
He loved to play and jump and shout, Free as a bird he would race about.
As the years went by he learned and grew, And became a man – as you will, too.

"He was fine and strong, with a boyish smile, But he'd seemed with us such a little while.
When war broke out and he went away, I still remember his face that day.
When he smiled at me and said, Goodbye, I'll be back soon, Mum, so please don't cry.

"But the war went on and he had to stay, And all I could do was wait and pray.
His letters told of the awful fight, (I can see it still in my dreams at night).
With the tanks and guns and cruel barbed wire, And the mines and bullets, the bombs and fire

"Till at last, at last, the war was won – And that's why we wear a poppy son".
The small boy turned as if to go, Then said, "Thanks, lady, I'm glad to know.
That sure did sound like an awful fight, But your son – did he come back all right"?

A tear rolled down each faded cheek, She shook her head, but didn't speak.
I slunk away in a sort of shame, And if you were me you'd have done the same,
For our thanks, in giving, if oft delayed, Though our freedom was bought – and Thousands paid!

And so when we see a poppy worn, Let us reflect on the burden borne,
By those who gave their very all. When asked to answer their country's call
That we at home in peace might live. Then wear a poppy! Remember – and give!

We Will Remember Them

they went with songs to the battle they were young
sraight of limb true of eye steady and aglow
they were stounch to the end against odds encountered
they fell with there faces to the foe
they shall not grow old as we that are left
age shall not weary them nor the years condem
at the going down of the sun and in the morning
WE WILL REMEMBER THEM

Re: We Will Remember Them

To think that the First World War veterans have nearly all passed away is very sad. I remember in my youth and teens there were so many men around who had fought in both wars. I don't think we really appreciated their sacrifice, being so young ourselves and so ignorant of life.
