Dangers of passive smoking

I gave up smoking over 20 years ago, having realised just how badly it was affecting my health.

I was however a pretty heavy smoker when I had my first two GSD's and often wonder looking back, if my smoking did effect their health. One of which died of a cancer related illness.

With all the information with regard to the dangers of smoking and effects of passive smoking, I find it appalling to see parents smoking in cars, with babies strapped to the back seats

Now the PDSA have spoken out about the harmful effects on our pets

Passive Smoking and Pets: Can Second Hand Smoke Harm Your Dog?

Personally, I do not feel that parents of pet owners should smoke anywhere near children or pets. Just wondered what your thoughts are?

Re: Dangers of passive smoking

I think they shouldn't either, but saying that, I do smoke in the same room as the hamsters. I have the windows wide open though and the sofa is underneath the windows.

Re: Dangers of passive smoking

Well I voted yes because I think passive smoking is harmful to people and animals alike. My mum and dad used to smoke like chimneys when we were growing up and I had to live with passive smoking for about 30 years. Now we have a smoke free house as none of my family smoke which I am glad about.

Re: Dangers of passive smoking

Well, I do feel that there is little excuse these days for subjecting children and animals to smoke.

Yes, it is still thankfully a free country and of course people are entitled to smoke is they chose, but not at the expense of another person/pets health.

You do not have to look far however, to see someone smoking in a vehicle that is carrying children

Re: Dangers of passive smoking

i have to advise parents to change their clothes after a cigarette because the nicotine clings to clothes and they can still breathe it in. Also not to smoke in the car.

Re: Dangers of passive smoking

I grew up with all 3 of my parents smoking (mum and step dad plus my dad) and used to suffer terrible coughs, my step dad used to wind up my mum saying it was a smokers cough so i must be smoking at school, but in truth i have never smoked in my life. It was so bad when i had the coughs i could barely sleep at night. It started to go when i moved out (into a smoke free home with the OH), and now i still get bad coughs but no where near as bad.

I am convinced it was due to passive smoking as i grew up.

Re: Dangers of passive smoking

We refuse to consider anyone as a live in pet sitter who smokes.

It is one of the first questions asked from potential clients. However, as the law stands, we could be seen as discriminating against people who smoke So far, we have encountered no problems, but I do worry that our policy may be called into question.
