A bit of useful advice - verified by the Dorset Police .
The number does work from a mobile. This actually happened to someone's daughter.
Lauren was 19 yrs old and in college. This story takes place over the Christmas/New Year's holiday break. It was the Saturday before New Year and it was about 1.00pm in the afternoon, and Lauren was driving to visit a friend, when an UNMARKED police car pulled up behind her and put its lights on.
Lauren's parents have 4 children (of various ages) and have always told them never to pull over for an unmarked car on the side of the road, but rather wait until they get to a service station, etc So Lauren remembered her parents' advice, and telephoned 112 from her mobile phone. This connected her to the police dispatcher she told the dispatcher that there was an unmarked police car with a flashing red light on his rooftop behind her and that she would not pull over right away but wait until she was in a service station or busy area.
The dispatcher checked to see if there was a police car where she was and there wasn't and he told her to keep driving, remain calm and that he had back-up already on the way. Ten minutes later 4 police cars surrounded her and the unmarked car behind her.
One policeman went to her side and the others surrounded the car behind. They pulled the guy from the car and tackled him to the ground...... ..the man was a convicted rapist and wanted for other crimes. I never knew that bit of advice, but especially for a woman alone in a car, you do not have to pull over for an UNMARKED car.
Apparently police have to respect your right to keep going to a "safe" place. You obviously need to make some signals that you acknowledge them I.e., put on your hazard lights) or call 112 like Lauren did.
Too bad the mobile phone companies don't give you this little bit of wonderful information. So now it's your turn to let your friends know about 112 (112 is an emergency number on your mobile that takes you straight to the police because 999 does not work if you have no signal). This is good information that I did not know!
Please pass on to all your friends, especially any females

I just found this old email i'd saved, hope this is useful for all
Sorry but thats an urban legend... If you've got no signal on your mobile, you've got no signal.. if you have, then both 999 & 112 work

Urban Legends Reference Pages: Calling #77 to Reach Highway Patrol

It's possible that they had a stolen car matching your car, and they were just checking that you hadn't stolen it? That happened to me a while ago! I got pulled twice in the space of 20 minutes

Re: Would you find this weird?

maybe because you was trying to 'loose' them they may of thought ooooooo drink driver?

my aunty has had it - but was the 4x4 marked police car following her and she said she felt safe because she had my lil cuz in the car.

But I think I'd just tell them where to go if it was an unmarked car asking me to get out.

Re: Would you find this weird?

Hmm
I certainly would not be getting out my car for them

To be honest with the amount of cr@p that is happening i wont really get out my car for anyone.

I used to keep my horses in a lovely rural place which had a beautiful lane to,the farmer in the next farm nearly ran over a body in the road when he got out to see if he hit it,it was on the passenger side,he was whacked over the head by someone in the bushes and his car taken it was used to steal petrol and later involved in a hit and run

I have been asked to get out my car by two police, about ten years ago when i was younger ,but refused i showed my license through the glass and opened the window a bit and told them i would drive to the police station, they could follow me, where i would get out the car.

They "called through a few details" and then said it all checked out and i could go

Re: Would you find this weird?

This day and age they should have known better than to expect a young lady to get out of the car in a dark lane! They may not even have been on duty or real police we know strange things go on these days! But never think its gonna happen to us! I never go out in the dark on my own now, not even to walk ozzie! What is the world coming too!

Maybe they were just trying to put your mind at rest that you werent in trouble by being friendly

I am biased because my uncle is a copper, but they dont sound like they did anything wrong to me.
Yep. You don't always have to be doing anything "wrong" for the Police to pull you over. They do random checks on drivers, or if they think you look/are acting suspicious.

Personally, I wouldn't have minded 2 police officers pulling me over down a country lane... my fantasy could come true after all. Haha, woooops .
