Heartbreaking sight!

I have just arrived home having been extremely upset having followed a meat wagon.

The lorry was huge and stacked 3 high were these beautiful little calves with the most forlorn expression I had ever seen. Eventually, I had to pull off the road as I just couldn't drive.

This is not a post about vegetarianasm, but knowing that these poor babies are going to slaughter at such a young age and stacked like sardines in a can

Re: Heartbreaking sight!

Are you sure they were going for slaughter, a lot of calves are being transported at the moment to be put on their summer grazing.
Not all stock are grazed on the fields adjacent to the farm where they have been kept all winter.
I walked in a field on Saturday where a herd of young stock had just been shipped in by lorry, they were very happy little cows

I love watching the youngsters going out to graze for the first time..they go absolutely nuts! Let's just assume that's where your lot where going Nina.

Re: Heartbreaking sight!

It was the sight of some sheep going to slaughter that pushed me into becoming a pescetarian. I'd been thinking about it for ages and then I saw the sad expression on one of the sheep and decided then and there to stop eating meat.

I still feel awful seeing fish happily swimming around though knowing that I eat them but haven't yet decided to become vegetarian.

Hopefully, the calves you saw were going to pastures new.

Re: Heartbreaking sight!

I was a vegitarian when i was a teenager...most of us go through that phase!! but now I eat meat but buy free range from the local farmers market and supermarket. I believe that we are ment to eat meat as we are omnivores but we can make a concious decision to eat ethically reared produce, and at least allow it a good life. but some times I think that producers are too quick to send young to slaughter for the tenderness then the idea of allowing it to have a life first.
dont know about most people but Id rather have a bit more toughness and know It had a longer, better life the not.
trouble is, theres hardly anywhere that sell older produce like mutton for example.
