And does anyone know how you find out who is a mod? short of guessing and clicking on their profile? can't find a "mod" list anywhere..

If you want to report spam, there is a report button in the top right hand corner of the post (A red triangle). you can report things directly to the mods via that and they'll deal with it as soon as one of them gets online.
