What do you mean by forum front page? Do you mean a homepage which isnt the forum, i.e. one with maybe the 5 best forum threads at the moment, some news, maybe a poll etc..???

I'm in two minds a) might be nice, could announce events & bdays etc.
b) might be annoying having more things to click on (or maybe thats just me being lazy and having arguments with the wireless signal!!!)

It's not a bad idea, however, I'd probably just bookmark the forum and come in via the bookmark .

As for content, you could have something like... "10 most recent posts", a random snippet from the pet encyclopedia, a couple of random photos and maybe a bit about the site?

I also would bookmark the forum and come in via that ....as the forum is viewable without being a member etc how would a frontpage make any differences to the forum?
