Exclamation Attention members: Info we need before we can help, please read before posting!

There are quite a few threads on here from members asking for help, it would be very useful if anyone asking a question could provide us with some vital information on their tank set-up so we can save time helping to rectify the problem.

Could members please obtain and provide the following information before asking for help:
  • Tank size, either in litres, gallons or dimensions (length x width x height)
  • Filtration type (internal, external, undergravel etc)
  • Whether or not the tank has been cycled, and if so, for how long
  • Water parameters (pH, ammonia, nitrite and nitrate. Temperature would also be useful)
  • Date of last water change, maintenance carry-out (i.e filter cleaning)
  • Tank decor and type (i.e rocks, bogwood, resin ornaments)
  • Any chemical media in use?
  • Fish stocks (not just numbers, but a concise list of every species. No need to include scientific names, unless the fish in question does not have a valid common name or shares its common name with other similar species).
  • Any invertebrates or amphibians (i.e snails, shrimp, axolotls, frogs, newts)?
  • Plant biomass (or in other words, whether your tank has live plants or not).
  • A general description of the problem. For disease-related problems, a photo of the affected fish will aid diagnosis.
For disease-related questions, details on whether any chemical medications have been used.

For plant and algae-related issues, the following information would be particularly useful:
  • Type of lighting and wattage
  • Whether the tank is exposed to any direct sunlight
  • Any CO2 injection?
  • Any fertilizers dosed?
  • Subtrate type and depth
  • For algae problems, a description and photo of the algae in question

Not really so important. For example. ambient room temperature will have an insignificant effect on tank temperature, unless you live in an igloo or a sauna. Exposure to direct sunlight has already been included in the list.
