Vanishing Fish!

Ive had 4 platys in my tank now for 5 weeks now. They seem to be fine. Recently in the last few days Ive noticed one of them keeps hiding in a small cave but usually I can see its little eyes staring out which is how I know its in there. Today I cant seem to find it anywhere. Im sure it must be in the cave perhaps really deep init. I dont want to disturb the case incase of scaring it. It has to be in there as it is no where else in the tank!

Any ideas why it keeps hiding away in the cave all the time? It does eat as normal.

My tank is 65L and I only have the 4 platys at the moment... 2 red and 2 blue!

Re: Vanishing Fish!

Is the Platy a male or female? Remember that it does take time for the fish to settle and in many cases the fish can hide for weeks or even months on end before appearing. Back in my days of marine fishkeeping I used to keep a few species of Pseudocheilinus wrasses. Most of them would hide for around 2-3 months before jumping out of the tank.

It is also quite likely that the fish in question is being bullied, Platies are normally very peaceful fish however the males can quarell betweeen themselves, and older males can make life misery for younger and weaker specimens. Can you see any spots, lumps, wounds, cotton wool-like growths or anything unusual on the fish?

Thanks Pleccy! The fish in question seems to look fine! I bought them all at the same time but I dont know if they are male/female! I had them for about 4 weeks before this one started hiding away up until now it had been happily swimming about with the others and only recently has started hiding away not sure why! When it does come out which is rare it does look perfectly normal and eats etc!
