Help with Water Testing levels

Hi all,

Its been 2 weeks and 2 days since I set up my tank.

I tested the water last week and again just now and the results have not changed apart from the Nitrate any suggestions is this normal? Im planning on getting some tropical fish so what should the ideal results be?

12-Oct

High Range pH Test 8.2
Ammonia Test 1.0
Nitrite Test 1.0
Nitrate Test 40.0

19th Oct

High Range pH Test 8.2
Ammonia Test 1.0
Nitrite Test 1.0
Nitrate Test 10.0

Re: Help with Water Testing levels

Patience is the key, the ammonia will start to drop first closely followed by the nitrite. After this the nitrate will either rise or fall.

Before you add any fish the ammonia and nitrite levels will both need to be at 0ppm.

Re: Help with Water Testing levels

i agree with above, the only safe amonia and nitrite levels are 0. I have seen some places say that very low levels are ok, but rememer its very toxic for your fishes.

also, once all is settled jsut start with one or two fish, as your first fish will upset the balance a little as well.

for the first 6 months you will probably be best testing the water as often as you can. After a while everything will settle and you will have a fantastic tank :-)
