Red face New fish ...

Hi all, i am new to this and any forum! I have 3 cats (Maggie, Barney and Alfie) and have recently got two little fish called Phil and Gary...I will post some pics up as soon as i figure out how

I have a question about the filter in my fish tank....i have a Spongebob Squarepants tank and it has its own filter that came with the tank which i believe is all set up correctly.

The filter iteself makes quite a loud buzzing noise, which i did expect and am fine with. However, the filter itself also makes a dripping sound and i wondered if there is anyway of making the noise quieter as i understand it is a neccesity to have the filter dripping water back into the tank, otherwise it would be pointless

So does anyone have any ideas about whether it is normal for it to be so loud or shall i just put up with it?! lol

It doesn't really effect me as i have a fan on most nights in my room anyway but wondered if you might have any thoughts

Thanks in advance for any helpful replies and look forward to chatting to you all soon

Re: New fish ...

You can put the outlet under the water so that it doesn't drip.
Not sure how loud they are supposed to be though, some of the cheaper filters can be noisy.

Re: New fish ...

Oh yeah i think it is a cheap one as the tank was only £20 lol!

I like the idea of putting it in the water so it doesn't drip, but i was under the impression that it needed to be out of the water so it can filter through? Or am i having a blonde moment...

Re: New fish ...

if you put the outlet under the water be sure you have an air stone in your tank.

You need to be sure you have some form a surface agitation as this helps to break down and disperse harmful gasses that build up in the water (C02).

You dont need to have it running all of the time, you could turn it off (air pump i mean) at night while you sleep then run it during the day.

Be aware that the smaller the tank the less water you have so the easier it is for bad chemicals and gases to build up.
