Re: Feeding in the winter
In the winter, fish outside enter a kinda semi-hibernation state, and usually hover at the bottom of the pond. the stomachs of the fish are full of bacteria that help to break down the food in the gut of the fish, but at low temperatures, in winter, that bacteria doesnt work very well at all. meaning that if you feed your fish in winter, they cant digest the food properly, so it stays in their gut, slowly rotting, and causing huge issues for the fish. if your worried about feeding, then on milder winter days when the sun is shining, you can perhaps feed a little of a wheatgerm based food, which is low in protein, and thus easier for the fish to digest. however, i know a lot of pond keepers who dont feed their fish at all from october/november to march/april, with no detriment to their health.
