Re: acara?

Blue Acara are a pretty typical south american cichlid. they are hardy, and easy to keep.
however, as with most cichlids, they are a highly aggressive fish, and should therefore only be housed with the largest and most robust of tankmates, those capable of looking after themselves, and giving as good as they get. certainly not a species to be mixing with a general community!
they grow to a maximum size of about 8" (excluding tail), and should be kept in no less than a 36" tank, but preferably much bigger. of course, with the big size, comes a big mouth, so it will eat any tank mates capable of fitting into its maw.

Re: acara?

It's actually a jack dempsey, i didn't realise untill i was told today. It's in a community aquarium now, and is no bother. She does seem quite lovely though.
The place i got her from was horrible, the tank she was in was litrally green, had no filter and was with around 100 other fish mainly platties or mollies, couldn;t really see clearly.
The tank was only a 2 ft, there was a guy there at the same time who took the other fish becuase he couldn't bring himself to leave them there. (he has 4 3ft tanks he said he could put them in for now)

This may sound crazy, but can fish be friendly?
As soon as i put my hand in to sort the plants or pots out, she swim's around my hand, and is always looking out the tank and is always ready to be fed.
She will even follow my hand if i put it in front of the tank.

Re: acara?

to my knowledge, jack dempsey and blue acara are actually the same species of fish.

either way, what i said is exactly the same for jack dempsey. if they arnt the exact same species, then they are a very close relative, meaning their aggression levels and habits will be the same.
