"to spay or not to spay"
I became a mum to 2 Jills late july of this year.i have recently been contacting vets in my area for prices on getting them spay, but i am now very confused. I am aware of the fatal disease APLASTIC ANEMIA, which is why i thought that my ferrets needed the op but i can not seem to get a straight answer from the 6 vets i called on whether it is the best choice now due to a new finding that a jill which is spay has a much higher probability in getting adrenal disease. Some have told me to stick with the jill jab twice a year but iv bin warned that it is a very painful jab. Another option iv been told is an implant which is not yet licensed for ferrets but it is for dogs but the vets can get this for ferrets and it lasts for 18months.
I now do not no what to do, if anyone has any advice i would be very greatful as i want to do the best for my new little friends. ![]() Cheers x Last edited by kimmytanga; 14-10-2009 at 08:08 PM.. |

Re: "to spay or not to spay"
I would spay, the jab is very painful and it sends hormones sky high, most jills have a phantom which is distressing for them and can turn them into devils, ive been savaged by many after a jill jab that were previosusly gentle and laid back.
what you have to remember isovarian tumours are very common and spaying is the only way to stop this none of the other methods will. if your concerned about adrenal use the implant or jill jab for one year first.

Re: "to spay or not to spay"
i wouldnt reccomend a V. hob for beginners or where there are just one or two jills , there are many draw backs as in most cases the hob has to live a solitary life for half the year which isnt nice, they can pass on STD's so should never be shared around owners, they can be expensive to get done at the vets and if they fail which they can and do there will be several litters to rehome and raise.
Also mating is very rough and stressful for jills.
