Re: Ferrets.

yes should be fine
would keep close eye on them all but anyone would introducing a new animal

ferrets make good house pets you can train them to go in a litter tray like a cat, and take them out on leads or there be off,
only thing you got to make sure of is that you have no small holes, if they can get the head through then the rest will follow, at any angle very flexable.

Re: Ferrets.

hey,
I bred a litter of ferrets last year and they're so cute when they're young, I've never been biten by a ferret other than a play nip. The most dangerous part of the ferret is their claws I've had my arms scratched up and our oldest polecat managed to fall of my head and scratch my face.

Also, with the cats they should be fine as long as they smell the same, get a towel or blanket and rub it all over the cats then rub the ferrets. This will make the cats think they're one of their own. I would also recommend that the ferrets have their own space, like with dogs having a crate, just make sure there's not holes bigger than half an inch.

All ferrets are different they're like humans. You can get some nasty ones and some very tame ones. for example our Ink isn't like most ferrets he's calm, mature and very very overly friendly (never ever bitten anyone/thing) and then we have Jill, an albino, who's scatty.

good luck with it all.

Re: Ferrets.

thankyou very much. well we got two ginger hobs today from a man nearby at a tenner each and they were born march last year. they are very small for their age and one is even smaller than the other, but by no means baby size.
Very cute, and handleable, but a few nips.
They poop everywhere! very water too. hope thats ok.
We havnt introduced them to the cats yet and im very nervous. we thought they could sleep in and be introduced to the cats in the huge cat carrier we have and the cats could see them through the bars, but the smallest ferret can fit through one of the bigger holes in the door of it, so we had to put cardboard on the inside of the door, so now although the cats can smell them and know theres something moving they cant see each other like we planned. may have to wait till thursday till we can get some other sort of small cage type thing. only want something cheap thatll work and wont take up much room just for that.
in this situation how would you introduce yours?
How would you stop the attack if one did happen between the cats and ferrets during intros? we were gonna take a ferret and a cat and let them meet each other, then bring the other ferret out to the same cat after a while and then do the same with the other one.
they are asleep in the cat carrier at mo, and thinking they will be all night after the drive here and the exploring etc.
they have settled in quite nicely already, and have been stealing loads of the cats dry food out of their bowls and drinking lotsa water (and milk-but wont give them that again as I was later told they can only have cat milk, if any).
so after loadsa drink they should be ok to sleep now shouldnt they in there?

Re: Ferrets.

I guess if the ferret and rabbit have been together all the time it's fine.
Ours will kill and eat a rabbit as they've been used for rabbiting.

Not all my ferrets have been brought up with rabbits, some of them were bred as working ferrets and even then I can trust them with the rabbits and is it not a fact that the ferrets are supposed to chase the rabbit out of the warren, that's the reason for ferrators using nets.
I also feed my ferrets on road kill in the fur and poultry plus feathers.

By the way the ferret in my aviator was bred by me and friend who breeds rabbits wanted to start with ferrets so I let them have a friendly hob.

Re: Ferrets.

we got them now and will post pics soon, but wanted to ask what litter do you use? is sawdust ok? i have some here, but thought it may be way too dusty cos i took them off cat litter because someone told me its too dusty for them and toxic too. we are getting some carefresh tomorrow, which the pet shop said is like paper mashet or something and its fine for them, but ive heard bad things about it. i cant find anything else such as wood pellets or newspaper pellets or anything, and nothing cheap.

oh and can they have raw egg? will it stink or be messy? i was told just to crack the shell slightly and then give it to them and they will break it open and drink it without eating the shell.
intros with the cats are going well for now, except Toffee (my ferret, the smaller one) decided to grab onto Rolos (our smaller cats) tail as soon as they met and he was dragged along then. unlike him as he doesnt usually bother with anyone much, but is coming out of his shell abit now i see.
abit worried about it all, especially with Rolo.
How long would it take ina fight between a cat and a ferret (when the ferrets attcking a cat) for the cat to be seriously hurt? i will be seperating them straight away as soon as something, if anything like that happens of course, but just wondering, cos ferrets can kill cats cant they? but nomatter how hard they bite and where, you can always get them off by scruffing them cant you?

and how many of you have had your ferrets coat change to pure white in the summer or winter?
sorry for all the Q's, just really need all these answered asap.
thanks

Re: Ferrets.

i would use saw dust my self.
and they love a raw egg ours have one every now and then. you can put it in a bowl if you dont want them to roll it round dropping all the egg out,
i was told if they bite have a bucket of water nearby so could dunk them in
but with a cat and ferret there prob more play than any thing. keep eye out if you think its getting to ruff the pick one of them up until they have carmed down.

ours dont change colour but ink has gained morewhite bits now over the years.

looking forward to seeing the pic's

I have been using wood shavings for the past 30 years and the ferrets I have bred have had eggs for their entire life, having raised hens also means that my dogs, cats and ferret have had free range eggs for their entire life.

Why should the ferret attack the cat confused:

I have always found that it is the ferret that comes off worse by getting killed by cats

scruffing my ferrets was never an option for me, in the past if i tried with other peoples ferrets it was i who always ended up with their ferrets teeth in parts of my fleash

If the ferrets change to white then that is the true colour of your ferrets, the yellowing that some ferrets chane to has a lot to do with the hobs oilly skin secreations
