Shady is on a distinguished road
Borrowed time?

I think that it is coming to that part of owning an animal that everyone dreads.... my ferret, my little Leola... I think she is on borrowed time

She has got so thin, and she looks so old. And the other day she actually got a hold of my ear and bit me... she hissed whilst she was doing this. And this might not seem odd to anyone, but Leola has NEVER bit me in the whole... 6/7 years I have had her. She has always been so trustworthy, so when she climbed into my hood (which she often does) I didn't expect to feel her teeth on my ear. This is the main reason why I think she's going downhill. I took her to the vets, and she has been given some metacam to help with her legs (she has arthritis) and I've started to feed her the food I gave to my other ferret that got very thin towards the end of his life. So far the painkillers seem to be helping a little, she's moving around more, and the food is well liked by her and I will know tomorrow if it's put any weight on her (it will have been a week since her last weighing) The last time she was weighed at the vets (when she was healthy) she was 500+ grams, now she was 340grams. (She is tiny, so 500 grams was a good weight for her).

I just feel as though I'm merely keeping her comfortable until that horrible day comes. Which I know is all I can do as a loving and caring owner. I just hate this part of owning animals, to watch them deteriorate and dwindle before your eyes until it gets to the point where they have no quality of life and you have to make that heartbreaking decision. *sigh* I guess all I can do now is to keep her comfortable, give her lots of love and make the most of the time left that we have together....

I just needed to get this out, sorry for babbling on about this.
