Indoor ferrets?

Does anyone keep their ferrets indoors and what do you keep them in? Also how bad is the smell, Ive got male mice and male rats so Im not expecting a totally scent free pet but are they really pongy?

Re: Indoor ferrets?

Neutered/spayed ferrets have less natural smell than when they are entire.
Otherwise the smell is down to how you keep them really. If the litter tray isn't cleared regularly then it stinks, same as for a cat or anything else really.

Re: Indoor ferrets?

Thankies FF, thats what I expected, are they hard to litter train? My rats are litter trained but the girls took months to get the idea.

Re: Indoor ferrets?

Mine are good in the cage, but can be a little forgetful when free roaming, but saying that, they do have regular 'hot-spots'. I put newspaper down to save the laminate.

Re: Indoor ferrets?

People keep ferrets in indoor cages (ferret Nation) cage as people have said if neutered they dont smell that bad at all. some entire males dont smell bad but some really smell but if you where to keep them as indoor pets id recommend neutering them.

Re: Indoor ferrets?

i keep mine indoors, and as others have said keeping the litter clean helps keep the smell down,as does having them neutered/castrated.also changing their bedding frequently cuts down on the cage smelling.
mine are free roaming(when let out of their room) and have two regular toilet places that i either paper or litter tray.

I would love free roaming ferrets but Ive got 4 cats so I would really worry about either cat or ferret getting hurt

if your going to let them free roam though with the cats and dogs it will be better to get babies or adults who can be trusted with dogs, Blaze always plays with Donnie my old man, he is so soft he has never ever went to nip blaze he just jumps about like mad. lol
