I agree also. I got the flu last winter and almost died. Woody was so upset he tried to give me away to a rescue thinking it was something in our new house doing it to me. I did get better as you can see and he has promised me I am in my forever home, good or bad until death does us apart.

Is there a way to tell if an old lady like myself has been fixed? Any scars
or anything? I have noticed lately I have been very musky but I thought that is just the way ferrets smelled?

Well anyway, thanx for this info.

Just re-read this. You have written ''Jill's are not usually sexually active until their second year when they breed between March until August''.

Jills can become pregnant within a year. First season. 9 months'ish old. I realise 'their second year' can be read 2 ways, just felt the need to point it out though

re frita
as your an old girl you may well have been spayed there should be a scar down
your middle tho its not always visable not much help there
on the musky smell if youve been fixed then it could be adrenal gland problems
not sure how they get to the bottom of this as its difficult to dignose
theres an implant that helps with adrenal issues as well as taking hobs and jills out of season for 18 months to 2 years

is neutering a hob the same as removing his scent glands around his butt? is it cruel? im rescuing two hobs from an unwanted home and im deciding whetherto have them neutered or vasectomised, theyre both 1 and a half years old and have lived together without fighting

which would be best to do? theyll be kept inside (due to it starting to get colder) and have their injections so i can take them for walks etc

Geting hobs castrated isn't cruel. My two oldest are castrated and I'll be castrating my new boy too, as I'm keeping all my ferrets together is a big group. I don't know if they remove scent glands but the smell goes down a bit sometimes. I think castrating can prevent health issues but again I'm not too sure. I don't think getting them vasectomised would make much difference unless your going to use them to take jills out of season.
Have they always been kept inside? You might get more replies if you post as a new thead.

Some very good advice so far, so of two ferrets (not wanting to breed) is a Jill & vasectomised hob best, or two Hobs? If a Jill & hob, then best to know before I have an unexpected litter of kits.

Get her done as soon as possible, the boys normally will be scenting now so the girls will come into season in the next 3 months and most vets will not do the op if an animal is in season. i got my girls done at the end of last year to be 100% safe.
