Hannaford weapons-site is getting another phase of clean-up,
after finding more ditches full of dumped radioactive-salts ---
which burrowing animals dug into, ate, and carried off in their
guts, to re-distribute... Eek.

clean-up is good; dumping was @#$%*! asinine.

Gene protects brain-eaters from mad cow-type disease - Yahoo! News

this is important -
as the disease is a PRION illness, and there have been no cures
whatever for prion-type diseases.

scrapie in sheep, Chronic-Wasting introduced into wild ungulates
by a ?Utah? Colo? research-lab, mad-cow, variant Creutzfeld-Jakob,
are ALL prion diseases.

hopefully, this may prevent infection in wild + domestic animals,
+ save the white-tail deer, elk, and other ungulates that are now
infected, exposed, or at-risk in (last count) FOURTEEN states in
the USA... from one point-source, thanks to interstate commerce,
Grrr!, and captive-herd sales of infected animals.

these states are now *permanently infected* as the prions are
in the soil and trapped / bound to clay-particles; absorbed by
plants, the herbivores then ingest them.

preventing the illness in deer + elk or any other species (beef, sheep...),
will also save HUMANS who eat those animals.
this is the first ray of hope that i have seen;
i am praying it works!
jelly-blooms once rare (~every 40-yrs) are now
an annual event off Japan + other cold-water coasts;
fish, plankton, fisheries + swimmers are affected,
as is the larger ecosystem.

this is seen as a symptom of climate-change,

Since he was crowned the new World's Tallest Dog last week, Titan, a 4-year-old white Great Dane, has gotten so much attention that his Web site crashed! The Guinness World Record holder stands 42.25 inches tall to his shoulder and weighs 190 lbs. Rescued from a breeder in 2005, he's also deaf, mostly blind, and until two years ago, endured epileptic seizures, but none of these challenges are slowing this big guy down.

"The issues that he has don't affect the dog one bit," owner Diana Taylor tells PEOPLEPets.com. "I don't look at him as a sickly, ailing dog. He actually is, to me, in many ways, at an advantage. He's so calm, and his world is so peaceful."

Titan (a.k.a. Tite-Tite) lives in dog-friendly San Diego with Taylor and his canine siblings, 5-year-old Great Dane Ari (also deaf) and 9-year-old German shepherd Diego. The family enjoys their active lifestyle, and they are always out at the dog beach, the dog park or dog restaurants. When it came time to take Titan's official measurement for Guinness, Taylor threw a "big old party" for other dogs and friends at a local day spa. "Everything I do has to be a party!"

Taylor, who views Titan's new title as a chance to educate people who are interested in Great Danes, is still working through all the guestbook comments she's received on Titan's Web site (which is up and running again).

"I got messages from people with special needs dogs, messages from people who were disabled and really connected with Titan's story," Taylor says. "It's already been a lot of education about the joys and challenges of having this kind of dog. I try every single day to lead my life to be worthy of being this dog's dog mom."

BUAV: Animal experiments rise in Northern Ireland

The BUAV has expressed its concern following a worrying 15 percent increase in the number of animal experiments carried out in Northern Ireland. The...

The BUAV has expressed its concern following a worrying 15 percent increase in the number of animal experiments carried out in Northern Ireland. The newly available statistics show that in 2008, 17,875 experiments took place compared to 15,525 in 2007.There was a large increase in the number of mice (54 percent total of animals used) and cattle (13 percent total of animals used). In 2008, 9,229 mice, 1,198 rats, 3,121 domestic fowl, 2,047 cattle, 93 rabbits and 38 horses/donkeys were used. Of those experiments carried out, 77 percent were done with no anaesthetic.

On a more positive note, the BUAV welcomes the fact that, as in previous years, no non-human primates were used in research during 2008.

In addition, no testing on animals occurred for cosmetics, household products, chemicals, pesticides, tobacco or for education and training.

The BUAV is calling on Northern Ireland to excise its own powers to make policy decision about animal experiments and ensure animals are never used for these purposes.

However, the BUAV is concerned about the re-use of cats and dogs in veterinary research. In 2008, 8 cats were used in 42 procedures and 6 dogs were used in 140 procedures.

BUAV's Senior Parliamentary Officer, Jenny Gowen states:

"Animal experiments is a devolved issue in Northern Ireland, officials and ministers have the power to impose stricter controls on the use of animals and provide more transparent information for the public. Given the rise in animal experiments last year we are disappointed they do not seem to be taking this opportunity."

For further information, please contact Carla Owen or Jenny Gowen +44 (0)207 700 4888 or Email Press Enquiries or BUAV (out of hours) +44 (0)7850 510 955

PROVIDENCE - Some Saratoga County hunters made a disturbing discovery in a remote section of woods - a four-year-old beagle bound with duct tape and...

PROVIDENCE - Some Saratoga County hunters made a disturbing discovery in a remote section of woods - a four-year-old beagle bound with duct tape and wrapped up in a garbage bag.

The dog, named Daisy, was found off of Drager Road in Providence.

Daisy survived and is doing okay. She now wears a cone-shaped collar to prevent her from biting at her injured ears.

The man who found him, Ed Dandaraw, wants to why or how someone could do this to a defenseless dog.

Just a couple days ago, Dandaraw was hunting with friends when he saw a garbage bag move.

"At that time, I saw a dog's leg coming out of a hole in the bag," he recalled.

Dandaraw says whoever did this left just enough space around daisy's nose for her to breathe. Her front paws were bound together.

Dandaraw describes himself as an animal lover and says his discovery made him sick to his stomach. He and his hunting buddies called police and carried Daisy to the nearest road.

"About halfway out to the main road, we're on a four-wheeler, I felt the dog go totally limp and I thought he had just died," Dandaraw said.

But Daisy came to, police brought her to the vet and other than infected ears and matted fur and being 20 pounds lighter, she's okay.

Not the case for whoever did it, in Dandaraw's opinion.

"This person was a very sick, deranged person because they left the dog taped up entirely, but they left the nostrils open so he could breathe in the bag," he said.

Dandaraw says the owners should consider changing the dog's name to "Lucky."

Police are looking for the person responsible.

ANIMAL welfare officers are investigating complaints of cruelty at an Anakie puppy farm.

RSPCA inspectors have confirmed they are probing De Motts Rd breeder Robert Adamo's farm after recently receiving complaints about the condition of his animals.

Mr Adamo denied the claims, saying his animals were well cared for, loved and treated humanely at all times.

City of Greater Geelong also confirmed staff want Mr Adamo to register as a professional dog breeder because of the number of litters he produced every year.

"We have received another complaint recently and there's an ongoing investigation at the moment," the RSPCA's Tim Pilgrim told the Geelong Advertiser.

"It's a high priority of the RSPCA to raise public awareness of puppy mills."

Mr Pilgrim said Mr Adamo first came to the society's attention in 2007 when he had 30 dogs on his property.

Geelong council also confirmed staff had received complaints about dogs barking and had visited the property six times in two years.

"Our planning department is attempting to put together a case whereby he (Mr Adamo) will have to apply for a permit as a breeding establishment," council spokesman John Merlo said.

Mr Merlo confirmed Mr Adamo had 52 registered dogs on the property, mainly large breeds such as French mastiffs, great danes, border collies and German shepherds.

Mr Adamo said he bred puppies to help pay for animal feed but said all were vaccinated and vet checked prior to sale.

"People call me the dog whisperer," Mr Adamo told the Geelong Advertiser when two trainers questioned why one of his pups had become aggressive after seven months.

"I cross dogs to improve them because a lot of dogs have problems.

"I've got a very good reputation," Mr Adamo said.

Henrietta Morrison confidently plunges her spoon into a tin of slow-cooked lamb hotpot and lifts out a mouthful for inspection. She passes her nostrils over the meat chunks and accompanying sauce, smiles, then places the whole lot into her mouth. "Delicious," she remarks, as a small crowd of onlookers gathers round to watch the spectacle.

Someone eating their lunch doesn't usually elicit such attention, but, then again, most people aren't prepared to tuck into a tin of dog food for sustenance. Morrison has a point to prove, though: she is at Europe's largest pet trade show, PetIndex, at the Birmingham NEC, and her company, Lily's Kitchen, sells the most expensive pet food on the market. Her dog food, for example, retails in places such as Harrods for more than £2 a tin, with the promise that the contents are "proper food".
