[edit] Introduction
The Shar Pei dog breed is well known for its wrinkly appearance and the name 'Shar-Pei' is translated as 'Sand-Skin' and refers to the dogs rough coat.
[edit] Origin and History
The Shar Pei dog breed is an ancient breed and is said to have orginated near a small village called Tai Li in the Kwangtung province. The breed has thought to have existed in southern China since the Han Dynasty around 200 B.C. There have been clay figurines which have been found dating back to 206 B.C which closely resemble the Shar-Pei. People say that these figurine dogs maybe the ancestors of the modern Shar-pei due to the wrinkles, similar height and build and the curles tail.
