[edit] Introduction

The rex is a medium/large sized breed, weighing 6lbs - 8lbs. It is best known for it's unique, velvet like coat. The coat lacks the longer guard hairs of normal fur, meaning the hair is all of one length, very short and stands upright. The coat of a Rex is very soft and plush.

[edit] Origin and History

The mutation which causes the Rex coat was first seen in France in 1919. They were bred for use in the fur industry, and influences from heavier breeds also allowed them to be used for meat. They were first exhibited in 1924 and have remained a popular commercial breed. In recent years other breeds have been developed with a Rex coat, such as the smaller Mini Rex, Plush Lop and Velveteen Lop.

[edit] Appearance

Rex are well rounded, with medium bone and well proportioned, upright ears. An interesting feature of a Rex is that they have very short, curly whiskers. They come in a wide variety of colours, and in show stock the quality of fur can vary considerably between colours, with black and ermine being especially well known for a good coat.

[edit] Behaviour

Rex are generally very calm and easy to handle. They are laid back and affectionate when well handled from an early age. They are often said to be one of the most intelligent breeds, and make excellect pets.

[edit] Health and Care

Rex rabbits are a hardy breed when correctly cared for. The grooming needs are minimal, and a Rex will generally only need grooming in moult. As with all breeds, a good diet is the most important way to keep a Rex healthy. Rex can be more prone to sore hocks, caused by having thinner fur on the feet. Owners of Rex should ensure the rabbits bedding is cleaned often enough, and they should not stand on a hard surface for long periods of time. Well cared for Rex live long, active lives, with ages of 9 or more being common.
