ViewsMastiffFrom Pet Encyclopedia
[edit] IntroductionKnown as the oldest English breed and belongs to the Working Dog Group.
[edit] Origin and HistoryMastiff comes from the Anglo-Saxon word 'masty', meaning powerful. First introduced to Britain in the sixth century, it was used to fight bears, lions and bulls. When the baiting of these animals was banned in 1835, the Mastiff decreased in popularity and in world war 2 became virtually extinct. Luckily it has now been revived.
[edit] AppearanceA massive dog with a broad skull of square appearance. It has a close lying coat which colours are often varying shades of apricot, fawn, brindle or red and always have a black mask. Height is around 27-30 inches and weight 175-190lb.
[edit] TemperamentCalm, loving and often docile. They have good guarding instincts and are loyal to their owners. Not very trusting of strangers and benefit from early socialisation. Known to be good with children, this breed makes a wonderful loyal family pet. [edit] Health[edit] External Links[edit] References |
