[edit] Introduction

The Maine Coon cat is one of largest breeds of domestic cats. The Main Coon cat originates from New England in North America and is native to the state of Maine where it gets its name from.

[edit] Origin and History

Maine Coons are a large semi longhair breed. The coat is shorter across the shoulders and lengthens down the back and flanks. They carry a shaggy double coat with trademark large ruffle and a long plume tail. Their ears are large and carried high and topped with lynxtips. Ideally they should be longer in the back than height giving a rectangular appearance. Legs are sturdy with strong boning and large paws with furry tufts underneath. Coonies have a gentle expression with a twinkle of mischief in their eyes. In the Uk they are recognised in two tabby patterns being classic blotched with two tramlines down the spine line and swirls and oysters on the flanks. The Mackerel pattern is a single spine line with vertical stripes on the flanks. All tabbies carry a characteristic "M" on their forehead.

The Maine Coon temperament is that of an easy going laid back animal. They are clowns and never really grown up. Quite "dog like" by the fact that they enjoy the company of their human slaves and want to be involved in what is going on around the home. They are vocal but not noisy. They'll wander around the house "chirruping" and chatting. Most importantly they like to know where you are and what you're doing. They like to read the newspaper with you or help you on the computer.
