Jumping

Bold text I have recently started jumping and really enjoy it. There is only one problem. Whenever I approach the jump my pony slows down, and sometimes knocks it. I try to squeeze him on and give more impulsion, but then I am too late to get into the jumping position, and the jump doesnt go too smoothly. How can I overcome this.? Thanks.
