[edit] IntroductionThe English Spot is a medium breed, weighing 6lbs - 8lbs. It is also know as the Old English, or just English rabbit. They are popular because of their striking spotted markings. [edit] Origin and HistoryThe English Spot is a very old breed, and was documented in England as early as 1805. At this time they had patches, but selective breeding has made the distinctive spotted rabbit that we have today. [edit] AppearanceThe English Spot is an attractive breed. They are long and lean, with a full arch body type, long legs and upright ears. They should have a butterfly smut on the muzzle, rings around the eyes, cheek spots, elbow spots, a dorsal stripe and symmetrical chain spots on either side of the body, which should get larger towards the hips. They come in an increasing choice of colours including black, blue, lilac and chocolate. The markings should follow the breed standard as closely as possible, but the perfectly marked English Spot has yet to be bred! [edit] BehaviourEnglish Spots are a very easy going breed. They are quiet and gentle, and English Spot does are known to be excellent mothers. They are easy to handle, and rarely bite. They can be affectionate and playful, and enjoy human company when well handled from a young age, making them excellent pets. [edit] Health and CareEnglish Spots are hardy and easy to care for. They sometimes tend to be more sensitive to cold than other breeds, so extra hay on cold nights is advisable. They only require grooming in moult. With a good diet and lots of love and attention English Spots can reach ages of 8 or more. [edit] External Linkshttp://thebrc.org/english.htm http://www.aesrc.com/thebreed.htm [edit] References |
