ViewsBeagleFrom Pet Encyclopedia
[edit] IntroductionThe Beagle is a hound dog. Though it is uncertain, most think their name came from the french word "begueule", meaning "open throat". This makes sense since all beagles "bay", which is howling. This was used to communicate while hunting. Beagles are quite popular due to their good temperament and fairly small size. They are also less prone to health problems. Unfortunately, this all makes them a major target for people performing animal testing. Beagles, however, are also known for the hard work it takes to train them, not because they aren't smart, because they are. They are simply a little stubborn, but they are very loving and are also a great choice with smaller children. [edit] Origin and HistoryBeagles originated in England, and were bred for hunting. They are scent hounds. The white tip of their tails were often used as a flag to communicate to the other hunters. [edit] AppearanceThe Beagle is a medium-sized dog. Their colourings are more commonly Tri-coloured. Born almost always black and white, they can develop their brown/liver colour throughout their lives. [edit] TemperamentThey are lovely dogs, great with kids, but are prone to 'make a run for it', if taken off the lead. They can become destructive if they are left alone in the house, so, will need another Beagle for company OR human contact. My Beagle, Ziggy, just eats, sleeps and walks.....but be prepared to walk for miles, as once she sets off on her main afternoon walk, she gets her head down and goes like a miniature rocket. They are great company and wonderful for exercise for you. I have lost 5 and half stone since March just walking her !! I can heartily recommend a Beagle for company, but would also suit a family with young children. However, be prepared for some long, hard walks.......
