[edit] IntroductionThe Angora is a longhaired and stunning breed of rabbit, well known because of it's snowball like appearance, due to it's long wool, covering the whole body. They typically weigh around 7lbs, and their wool is often plucked or shaved to be spun. [edit] Origin and HistoryThe Angora is a very old breed, and has been documented since Roman times. It is believed the Romans kept Angora to use their wool. The Angora was highly prized in England in later times, and a law was put in place to stop export to other countries. The Angora has now been developed into a few different types, including the English, French, German and Dwarf Angora. [edit] AppearanceA well groomed Angora often resembles a fluffy ball with ears! They should be broad and cobby with well proportioned ears. The back is high and well arched which helps to achieve the "snowball" look. The coat can reach lengths of 15cms, and the ears should have tufts. Pet Angora are commonly shaved or trimmed with the wool being left only on the head, ears and feet. [edit] BehaviourAngora are a friendly and laid back breed. They enjoy being handled if well socialised from a young age, which is important as they need to be groomed often. They are sometimes described of as lazy, but should still have plenty of space. [edit] Health and CareAngora are a demanding breed to care for. The long coat needs regular grooming, everyday for a long coat. Failure to groom will result in matts which are uncomfortable for the rabbit and can cause many problems if left. They are also at risk of overheating in hot weather. Pet Angora can be trimmed or shaved to make the rabbit more comfortable. When properly cared for they are a fantasic breed, and can live to 6 or more. [edit] External Links[edit] References |
