ViewsAmerican Pitbull TerrierFrom Pet EncyclopediaAmerican Pitbull Terrier The American Pitbull Terrier is probably one of the most talked about breeds in history. The APBT originated from America in the early 1800’s and was bread from different terrier crosses from Ireland and England for the purpose of Bull bating. When Bullbating became illegal many who supported this moved into dog fighting. When this was also illegal we began to see more APBT become pets and used as working dogs on farms. The first registry to register the breed was the United Kennel Club, which was actually founded with the APBT. The APBT is a loyal loving, athletic breed and not the man eater the press like to promote it as. They love the company of humans, especially children and are very eager to please. The APBT can be dog aggressive but this can be stamped out completely at an early age with early socialization. There are many ridiculous myths surrounding this breed such as it having a locking jaw. The APBT jaw is no different in mechanism than any other breed of dog and does NOT lock! Sadly the APBT is now illegal to breed in the UK as it comes under the Dangerous Dogs Act. This was due to a rise in attacks from the breed. This was caused by the few APBT being used for the wrong reasons such as illegal dog fighting and the breed had also received attention from drug dealers and criminals who would use them as guard dogs or weapons. There are only 4 APBT legally owned in the UK but there are many illegally owned also. I do not think we will ever see the legal ownership of the APBT in the UK again. Irresponsible owners and the press have totally destroyed the reputation of this amazing breed. Magik |
