[edit] IntroductionThe Airedale Terrier is the largest of the Terrier dog breeds, weighing between 23-40kg. They feature a wirey coat, tan to blond in colour with a black saddle. In the UK Kennel Club it belongs in the Terrier Dog Group. [edit] Origin and HistoryThe Airedale originates from Yorkshire in the North of England. They were originally bred for hunting Otters in the River Ayre (hence the name), and were originally called the Waterside Terrier. Later the breed were mixed with Otterhound to create the "king of the Terriers", the Airedale. Airedales have had a varied working past, including being used to hunt game in Africa to Police Dogs in the UK. [edit] AppearanceThe Airedale stands square, with a flat head and broad chest. The dog has V-shaped ears that fold down and slightly toward the front. The Airedale has a textured coat, with coarse wirey coat covering the body and legs. This often can become wavey or even curled. They feature an under-coat which is essential to be stripped in working dogs, however, many owners chose to clipper rather than hand strip for pet Airedales. The Airedale can feature a small amount of white on the chest. This is common in puppies and can often grow out. A small amount of white only is accepted in showing circles. The tan colour can range from a reddish-tan to a light blonde. [edit] TemperamentA highly intelligent breed that needs plenty of exercise and mental stimulation! As puppies they can be considered very energetic and beware have tendencies to chew, all and anything they chose which could include your most expensive handbag, shoes or even carpet! A firm and patient owner will reap the benefits of staying in control of the dog and ordinarily some of the more unattractive traits like chewing will diminish by 1 year. The dogs independence can be a plus, but watch when let lose from a leash as they can wander. Strict obedience training will help considerably to bring about a loyal and unique companion that would melt any heart! [edit] HealthAiredales have a life expectancy of between 10 and 12 years and commonly have large litters of around 8-10 pups. As with many larger breeds, Airedales can be susceptible to Hip Dysplasia however good genetics in breeding should eradicate this. It is known for Airedales to often get dry, itchy skin patches and be sensitive to shampooing and cleansers. More common in the Airedale is frequent ear infections, however regular ear cleaning can help prevent this. Also, eye infections can frequent, however all in all the Airedale is a sturdy and reliable dog breed. [edit] External Links[edit] References |
