No don't. Tell her you will not be walking the dog as you have not been paid and that you need at least 24 hours notice to cancel or she will have to pay. You could have booked another walk in there.

You have to be tough or they will run circles around you. I know from experience that if they can get away with not paying, they will. I have had pupils like that in the past who have had their lesson, then said: I'll pay you next time. Then they cancel and you never see them again. I used to insist on cash up front, before the lesson, and you should be doing the same. Cash only, no cheques, bank transfers or anything else.

I have a friend who used to be a cleaner. The story she told me would have been laughable had it not been such a damned cheek. She used to clean for this woman in a big house. She had not been paid for two weeks, and on the third week when she turned up asking for her money, the woman told her that she did not have because they had two cars to run and they had just had to pay for their kid's skiiing holiday! Then she showed her the cupboards and demanded that my friend clean them out. Jenny said: They are not as bad as mine, and that is where I am going - home to do mine!

I don't think she ever did get the money out of her. Doing something you enjoy does not mean you have to do it for free.

Re: got a non payer already,

remember you are a business. you need to set your limit as to how much work you will do for potentially free and stick to it. i wouldnt walk the dog until you have been paid for the work you have already done otherwise dont expect to get paid for it

Re: got a non payer already,

I have already got an established business and allow cancellations on the day - normally this would be by 8am for a 9am, 11am or 1pm walk. In 5 years of trading I have never had a deliberate non-payer (forgetful owner - YES!).

You could say that you wont be able to walk the dog at the next scheduled walk unless money has been transferred to your account or cash is left, but it may be a temporary problem and you don't want to lose a client when you are just starting out... Do you have a signed contract with your client?

If they are messing you about and cancelled two walks in a week with almost no notice anyway, now you havent even been paid, and are now ignoring you as well, personally I dont think its worth the aggro. You probably wont get it now and likely they will continue to mess you about as well if you do continue. Put it down to experience and find yourself another decent client who is reliable to fill their slot.

Unless you know a couple of 6 footers who are built like the proverbial and are quite handy of course, they might get it.

Re: got a non payer already,

Have a frank discussion with them over the phone. Be polite and professional and understanding. People dont want to cancel walks but some cant afford them after a while and get embarrassed.

I had a client paying late for a while and it started stretching out, so I gave a straight request by email and they said they had business trouble and they cancelled. they still owe $150 but at least its not a continuing nagging doubt and growing debt.

Re: got a non payer already,

I definitely wouldn't walk their dog again until they pay.

Question to others is there anything you can do about getting money they owe you if they refuse to pay or is it just refuse to take their dog out and leave it at that?

Re: got a non payer already,

if you want a compromise how about saying as you cannot trace having received their payment you will walk the dog as usual this week but if you have not been paid by the end of the week you will be unable to continue without full payment in advance.

Re: got a non payer already,

My customers get two strikes, then out if they've not paid. Times are hard, few people work for love alone. They've had their two strikes, pay day now me thinks.

I used to be like you and thought "oh they'll pay me some time" That's not good enough in business, you can't get away with not paying for your shopping, so why should they???
