Toilet training a 4 year old dog?

Hello.
My mother has currently moved in with her boyfriend and they now live together. her boyfriends previous wife owned a dog, she bought it as a puppy and as her boyfriend worked, she lost novelty for the dog and stuck it in the spare flat and left him with food and water, but no attention and was left to wee and poo. after they devorced my mums boyfriend won rights for the house, and kept the dog, my mum is in all day now because she is living with him and looks after him, he is never left alone gets plenty of attention and wee's in the garden.

The other day my mum was discussing with me about how the dog wees in the kitchen at night ( that's where it sleeps ) even though they take it into the garden before bed, and early in the morning, and always clean and spray the area where the dog has had a wee. so I agreed to help her out by asking the pet forums for advice on how to stop the dog doing a wee in his room at night?

Thanks for any advice

Well you might try the no error method, its hard on the trainer but does work...basically over the time when the dog would normally have an accident ie in the night, you keep the dog with you and on a lead. Every time he wakes during the night you take him out to the garden and encourage him to go...when he does, he gets the reward jackpot, praise, cuddles, treats, whatever floats his boat. Re clean the area where he normally goes and if you can put something like a chair or similar there so he can't get to it. It will take a few nights but should work assuming the dog (poor thing) has no other problems and this is just a habit thing

Your mum could try crate training him or confine him to a smaller area. Dogs won't urinate in or near their own bed unless they absolutely have to.

Ummm....most dogs in most circumstances won't....if you rely on this and the dog learns that its okay to break the taboo then you are really stuffed which is why it needs to be backed up by retraining/reminding the dog about where it is okay to go and where it isn't

I would also agree with crate training.
Like Alan said, dogs don't like to mess in their little area unless they REALLY have to. So if you are consistent in taking your dog/puppy out enough and giving it enough opportunities to go in the right place, your dog/pup shouldn't need to mess in his crate/area.
