Talking Update on Diesel and a little advice

Hi all so i had written a post already but Diesel managed to jump onto the laptop and it's gone, I'm not sure where lol, might have posted but i can't see it so i guess he shut the page lol.

He's doing really well he's a good wee thing. He's good on his walks a little pulling to start with but he's getting better with that, i can let him off the lead and he comes back when called about 90% of the time, he doesn't really go far anyway and were in a massive park/field where there are no cars.

He is getting so much better when left on his own also. He is only left during the day for about 30 minutes twice a week sometimes not at all, just depends if i have to leave for work before the babysitter arrives. He's sleeping in the kitchen at night so i'm actually getting to sleep in a bed

Hes great with my nephew as well, doesn't mind maxx using his tail as a hoover lol.

The advice I need is:

If i put him in the kitchen for example tonight i put him in there whilst my sisters were eating as he was jumping up at them, well as soon as i left him and shut the door he pee'd on the floor O.o I never tell him off for peeing i just clean it up and that's that. He doesn't pee overnight and when he's through with us during the day we never have any accidents. Also i had let him out twice 10 minutes before i put him in the kitchen and both times he pee'd so he wasn't desperate. It's like he's after attention, but i don't get it as i don't react to it.

Also he is allowed onto the sofa to cuddle and sleep during the day though he has his bed in the kitchen. Sometimes if he is lifted off the sofa he will growl, he's told off for this. Hes fine when you pick him up for anything else it's just taking him off the sofa. Is he saying it's my sofa? Any ideas on how to combat this other than what were doing? Should i just stop him coming onto the sofa all together?

Skye

i would keep him off the sofa for a little while then start making him to ask you to invite him on and make sure he waits until you invite him on and then and then only allow him on

Re: Update on Diesel and a little advice

Hi Crazy, thanks for the advice, i though i should start putting him off the sofa, right now he's lying right next to me on it sleeping. what would you suggest is the best way about doing it?

Should i pick him up and place him on the floor each time he jumps up? should i tell him off? Also how would i envite him up? just pat the sofa? how often should i let him up say in 1 day? just when i want or?

Thanks, never had this problem with past dogs lol, all new to me.

Re: Update on Diesel and a little advice

i personally wouldn't pick him up just make sure he isnt asleep... tell him off and nudge him off.... what we do with Kya is when she wants to come on the sofa she has to sit by it (which she does on her own now) then to invite her on yeh pat the sofa and say a cue word like "come on then"..... i would only let him on the sofa when u invite until he is getting down when you just say and is asking properly to come up to teach him so manners and then see how you go its up to u at the end of the day.... but just make sure you keep on top of his manners

Re: Update on Diesel and a little advice

I saw someone recommend teaching your dog to hand target (nose touch to palm of your hand, rewarded with a treat) so that you can hold your hand away from the couch and get him to target, which requires jumping down. That seems quite a clever idea - it makes getting off the couch the dog's own choice. You could then body-block if he tries to get back on.

Oh, and forget the idea of him claiming the sofa - he's just a pup! He's not trying to take over your house, promise.
The weeing in the kitchen that time could maybe be from excitement or exercise? If he'd just been jumping about excitedly that would not be strange. I don't think dogs can think "I'll pee so she pays attention to me"

Re: Update on Diesel and a little advice

Thanks Arwen. The target thing for on the couch sounds like a good idea, i'll look into that.

He may have just been a little over excited when i put him in the kitchen as i'd only been home 15 minutes and he gets all excited when i get home. Though sometimes i put him in during the day when i'm home all day and he still pees as soon as i leave him lol.

Re: Update on Diesel and a little advice

I put him off the sofa when he was asleep when i posted this and he's asleep on the carpet just now. I'm not sure which approach I'm going to use yet I'm going to have a little look at the target hand thing, never heard of it before.
